A Sympathetic Supervisor Helps A Worker Address His Excessive And Hazardous Drinking After A Destroyed Relationship

Barry got suspended from high school when he was fifteen years old and eventually got a job at a local copper smelting plant. For the last six years he has gained a reputation as a diligent and hard-working employee who only once in a blue moon takes off from work due to illness.

Nearly three months ago he started going out with a lady named Carol. They seemed to hit it off immediately and looked as if they had a lot of fun with one another.

When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This totally changed when they began seeing each other on a fairly constant basis. As a matter of fact, everything was going fine until Carol without prior notice called Barry one night around 2 AM and said that she had to stop dating him and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.

The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to Carol's apartment and found out that Carol had already moved out. Barry took this very hard. Actually, he was taken aback because they seemed to be getting along so very well.

So what did Barry do about Carol's leaving? Instead of working through his grief, he started getting drunk almost every night. It didn't take long for his buddies at work and for his manager to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least three times per week and that he often called off ill. What is more, some of the workers made an appointment with staff in Human Resources and said that Barry constantly came to work with a strong smell of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.

Barry's manager heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Friday morning he called Barry into his office. He told Barry that he had recently noticed a profound change in his attendance, behavior, work performance, and in his sick time.

"Barry, I am not an expert about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that conversant with alcoholism facts, but I have seen many of my relatives and friends experience some really bad problems because of their excessive and hazardous drinking. My recommendation is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse can do to a person."

"Why is this important? When individuals engage in abusive drinking, their drinking problems not only negatively affect the drinker, but they also adversely affect her or his co-workers, relatives, family, friends, and neighbors. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your abusive and excessive drinking from our employee's assistance program."

Barry admired his manager very much and as a result followed through with his recommendation the next morning when he called and scheduled an appointment with a healthcare professional in the employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't automatically feel any better or less depressed about the loss of Carol, he felt comfort knowing that his boss and his co-workers cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave Barry some psychological relief for the first time in several months and he honestly felt some hope that he would get his life back on track.
