Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Numerous alcohol abuse consultants state that wine, beer, and liquor ads produced by the media are a key reason for the rise in teen alcohol abuse.

Other substance abuse authorities think that the increase in youth alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of liquor, wine, and beer in our society. Still other alcohol abuse experts assert that many of our adolescents engage in destructive drinking because of the increased anxiety that they undergo.

From a somewhat different viewpoint, due to the fact that both parents in many families work full or part-time, the lack of parental supervision without a doubt has to play a key part in the escalation of teenage alcohol abuse. And lastly, different substance abuse specialists claim that the expansion of teenage alcohol abuse is due, in some measure, to our laissez-faire society.

One aspect of teen alcohol abuse that appears to be deficient in the chemical dependency research literature, to the contrary, is the absence of educational programs that teach teens how to enhance their coping skills so that their excessive and abusive drinking behavior is drastically reduced or exterminated. Stated differently, scientific research has revealed that there is an indirect association between poor coping skills and unhealthy and excessive drinking.

Essentially, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the higher the occurrence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a correct allegation, why isn't coping skills training an essential part of the educational curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

Let us create a scenario for descriptive purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are trained how to achieve excellent coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets stressful, students who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a healthier and more productive way, as opposed to others who fail to apply their coping skills.

More specifically, students who demonstrate superior coping skills will be more able to think proactively and display first-class decision making as opposed to students who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to implement good coping skills, resort to the "quick fix" of abusive and excessive drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, additionally, if adolescents not only received first class coping skills training but also received an extraordinary education that focused on the long term and short term destructive results associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills training, it is proclaimed, would help adolescents avoid the noticeable charm correlated with teen drinking and, for that reason, would significantly reduce the hazardous drinking behavior demonstrated by the youth in our country.

There are certainly a number of compelling reasons why so many of our adolescents drink in an injurious manner. Such a complex problem demands an all-inclusive and relevant response by our politicians, parents, educators, and students so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more productive and responsible manner rather than resorting to abusive and excessive drinking to solve their problems.
